An Impromptu Treasure Hunt

At the mall parking lot

found on parkingI found these treasures on the mall parking lot when I was walking last
Friday. The dime caught my eye
as I got out of the car; the rest of
the stuff was in my path as I
walked for exercise. There is a
plastic strawberry, a dime, two
pennies, a bent homemade cotter pin, and a pebble (at the edge of the strawberry) that jumped into my shoe somewhere along the route. I saw several bent metal coat hangers that had obviously been used to try and open locked car doors, but I didn’t pick them up. I also passed up a nice looking comb and lots of assorted junk.
Usually Leroy and I walk inside the mall, but he couldn’t make it that day and the weather was cool so I decided to walk outside instead. Little did I know the walk would become a treasure hunt. What could I have found if I had really been looking for something?
Of course, these collectibles mean nothing to a 77-year-old, but in my heart I’m still a child and I could not help but think how I would have reacted to such finds when I was five years old in 1936. The dime would have paid my way to two movies, the two pennies would have bought candy and cookies, and the cotter pin would have been subject to trade when I showed it to my friends. The plastic strawberry would have been a nice gift for one of my little girlfriends. The pebble from my shoe would of course have been considered a diamond because it has a little sparkle to it. Actually I think it may be a baby tooth that the Tooth Fairy dropped on the way to who knows where. And the bent wire hangers could have been used to hang stuff on tree branches. How exciting life was for little kids during the Depression.
Life is still exciting for little kids. Jesus said we must become like children in order to receive Him into our hearts. I wonder if Jesus wants us to keep on being excited about life like little ones are. I think He does.
