Don’t worry; trust the Lord
October 2, 2008 (Thursday)
We continue to watch the drama unfold in Washington, D.C. as the House of Representatives prepares to vote on an amended version of the bill they rejected earlier. Many observers think failure to pass the legislation will have dire consequences while others still feel that the government should back away. In any case, the word, “crisis,” continues to appear, banks and investment houses are falling and many people are fearful for the future. This fear is what I have been addressing in this blog.
I know precious little about economics, but I do understand that we have a serious situation on our hands. I understand that some of the institutional failures have already resulted in great losses to people, and others are forecast. I am, therefore, concerned about the effects of these fears and worries upon us as human beings. This is why I am appealing to ourselves as those who believe in Jesus and are persuaded that His teachings deserve our attention and devotion, to trust Him and follow His teachings.
Jesus, in the “Sermon on the Mount,” particularly Matthew 6:19-34, speaks to us very plainly about money, worry and priorities. He tells us more than once to stop worrying. He is very clear in saying that Money can become a god to us. He warns us that we can give our devotion to only one master. “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or cling to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Money.” There is no misunderstanding Jesus. He makes Himself clear. Whatever the future holds for us, we need to draw near to the Lord and trust Him completely, accepting His peace into our hearts.
