Hats off to the workers in Vacation Bible School.g>
June 4, 2007 (Monday) – Today is the first day of Vacation Bible School at our church.
At this point in my life, I can look back over many, many Vacation Bible Schools. And I remember the first time I ever heard about such a thing. I was sixteen, new to the idea of church, and the pastor asked me to be in charge of woodworking crafts for VBS. Not only did I not know what VBS was (sad, but true), I knew absolutely nothing about wood, saws, varnish and paint. Nothing. His request scared me to death. So I said “no.” And felt guilty about it. I missed a blessing.
A few years later, as a pastor, I learned about VBS and crafts. Every summer for umpteen years I was the VBS Principal (called “Director” today). The denomination used to make a big deal about the pastor serving in that capacity. We’ve since learned that people like Gayle Rozacky, our director this year, and Martha Wallace over at Refugio, and a lady I knew in a Houston church, do the best jobs imaginable, and the work is not only in good hands, but in the best of hands. VBS got a lot better when members got the chance to lead it.
Sunday evening before evening worship, I walked with Jim and Dee Morrison through the VBS rooms and we prayed in each one. I was deeply impressed with the rooms themselves, because so much work had been done in making them exciting places to be this week. Much hard work has already gone into this effort, and more is to come today and all this week, as the children’s groups meet.
So, hats off to the workers in Vacation Bible School. You are our heroes this week.
