VBS stirs much interest and does great good in many lives.

June 3, 2007 (Sunday) – I can never forget the gripping account of our POW’s in the Hanoi prison finding strength to endure in the scriptures they remembered and shared with each other. Forbidden to communicate, they devised codes (sweeps of the broom, etc.). Then as each man remembered a portion of a scripture verse, he would let the others know. Another would remember more of the verse, and together they compiled a collection of scriptures that sustained them through their long ordeal. They had memorized the scriptures when they were children. Where? In Vacation Bible School!
Vacation Bible School starts tomorrow, and workers are anticipating an attendance of 200 or more. Known as “VBS,” this annual event stirs much interest and does great good in the lives of the children.
In 1894, a Sunday School teacher was dissatisfied with the amount of time per week she could teach the children, so she started a daily Bible School for 40 students in a local school building. It lasted four weeks. The idea caught on, and through the years has taken on many forms, so that today it is no longer a quiet meeting of a few children studying Bible stories.
Bible teaching is at the heart of VBS, but special themes, decorated rooms, a powerful curriculum (new each year), and exciting activities are among the things that draw children and help them remember and apply what they learn.
We appreciate Gayle Rozacky and every person who has been preparing and will participate in this week’s VBS. The workers are excited about it. They have worked hard, getting ready for a wonderful week. Some of the children will come to know Christ as Savior and Lord this week. We pray for them and their families, that they may find great joy through these experiences.
For an idea of what this year’s theme, “Game Day Central” is all about, take a look at Lifeway’s introduction. The kids will have a good time this year, and learn a lot. All will be blessed.
