A beautiful place

I drove down to Rockport yesterday, and last evening Dwight and I had dinner at Off the Hook restaurant. I was reminded as we sat there and looked out the windows at the scenery, that the reason many people decide to visit or move to Rockport-Fulton-Lamar is the natural beauty of the area. The huge pelicans soared above the water, borne on the winds from the Gulf of Mexico and Aransas Bay. The Roseate Spoonbills continually worked on the edge of the marshy areas just outside the restaurant windows. Many other water birds worked their long bills into the water and the mud beneath it, feeding themselves ferociously. Occasionally a fish would jump above the top of the water, only to dive back in, seemingly calling to the pelicans above, “Ha ha. Cain’t ketch me!”
Forty-three years and six months ago, as my family and I were moving into the parsonage that was downtown by the old church buildings, Simon Sorenson came by to hook up some plumbing. He loved to talk and visit with people, so he brightened up my first day with brilliant and entertaining conversation, much of it about the old days in Rockport and his experiences at sea. I remember he said as he left the house, “Rockport will grow on you.” And it surely did.
There’s hardly a problem in this world that doesn’t look a little less menacing as you walk along the water’s edge, listening to the gentle moan of the breeze, and watching the waves relentlessly come and go. It’s fun and exciting to engage in water sports, to throw out the fishing line and pop the cork, to catch that big one after he puts up a fight, or to do the many other things one can do in the water, but if you just want to be lazy and enjoy the view, it’s there waiting for you, and provides an excitement for the soul all its own. It’s good to be here.
