In real life you need the real God

Last night I watched the movie, “Steel Magnolias,” on T.V.
It’s a great story about friends in a small town. They share their joys and sorrows openly. They are sometimes brutally honest with each other but always supportive. It’s also a story about families, their highs and lows, joys and sorrows, pleasure and pain. Very true to life. What a wonderful story.
As I looked at the movie, I thought, “These beautiful people are all movie stars.” Out there in the real world they are portraying, people look a little different. They come in all shapes and sizes, some pretty and some not, but they share the same kinds of experiences from day to day.
It was always hard for me to get excited with my friends about soap operas, and other programs which tell the secrets of folks, some of them hard to believe. I say it was hard to be impressed by fiction when I knew so many people going through so many trials. I promise you, no one can dream up enough “make believe” to compare with real life. Makes me think of Steve Green’s song:
“Everyday they pass me by,
I can see it in their eyes.
Empty people filled with care,
Headed who knows where?
“On they go through private pain,
Living fear to fear.
Laughter hides their silent cries,
Only Jesus hears.
“People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize, people need the Lord?”
