In the Garden
Charles A. Miles
1913
I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses,
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.
He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.
I’d stay in the garden with Him,
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.
I’ve kept my ear to the ground through the years, and I believe “In the Garden” is the favorite hymn of a great host of people. We are comforted when we sing, “He walks with me and talks with me and tells me I am His own.” We all understand we are having spiritual experiences.
Seriously, are there not times in your life when you sense the presence of the Lord. In those moments we almost feel like we could reach out and touch Him, because we are experiencing the presence of the risen Lord.
The song teaches us about the joy we share as we spend time with the Lord–a joy known only by a child of God–a person saved by grace through faith in Jesus as the Son of God. When Paul recites the “fruit of the Spirit,” he opens his heart and the words, “love, joy, peace” flow like a torrent because he knows Christ is with him every day, no matter what is going on in his life. He is with you and me, too.
