“..rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45 NIV)
Our rain chances were strong this week. The forecasters said there was a 40% chance, then 50%, then 70%, then 40, then 30, then “partly cloudy.” So we all joined in singing, “Oh, it ain’t gonna rain no mo, no mo, it ain’t gonna rain no mo. How in the heck can I wash my neck, if it ain’t gonna rain no mo?”
Did Jesus ever talk about the weather? Yes, he did. He said, “[Your Father in Heaven] causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45 NIV).
Far be it from me to edit the remarks of Jesus, but in Rockport the next verse might have read, “he also withholds rain from the righteous and the unrighteous.”
How soon we forget. It was just a few weeks ago that a “frog strangler” rain hit our town. Enterprise street was closed off for a short while as the flood subsided on the east end of the street. We know it can rain. We know it will rain. When and how much is not in our hands.
Remember, when it rains, some are glad to see it and others are not. Even the Lord cannot please everybody.
