The election is over. The votes have been cast and they have been counted. If it went your way, congratulations. If it did not go your way, I trust you will continue to work for the values to which you are dedicated.
Under our system of government, we continue to have elections. If this election did not produce the results you wanted, perhaps the next election will. The issues discussed during the campaigns are not going away; they will remain.
My heart’s desire is that we refrain from maligning the reputations and characters of our opponents. We may be politically opposed to each other’s point of view, but we do not have to be enemies. We can discuss rather than cuss. We can present rational arguments without becoming irrational. We can be friends even if we disagree.
It won’t be long until another campaign gets under way. You may have noticed that these national elections take about two years out of every four. If we make an effort to do so, we can be kind to those who oppose us. Isn’t that what Jesus asked us to do?
