Privilege and Responsibility: Vote

November 6, 2012 (Tuesday)
”picToday is Election Day. Actually, since the idea of early voting has become so popular, many people have already voted.
The New Testament gives us some principles of citizenship. The basic principle for us is that we should be people who obey the law and assume the responsibility to do our part in maintaining an orderly society. Since the forms of government have changed throughout history, the principles of citizenship given to us in the Bible must be interpreted in light of what our present freedoms are and what is expected of us in our present day.
In this country we have much for which to be thankful. Our nation was established upon the idea of freedom and upon the expectation that our citizens will be willing to do their part in maintaining our democracy. One of our basic responsibilities, then, is to vote.
In recent years, millions of people in countries around the world have been given the right to vote for the first time in many generations, and they are so thankful for this privilege that they have been known to stand in line for entire days awaiting their turn.
As Christians we have the privilege of counting good citizenship as service to God, according to the Scriptures. That means we care about what’s happening, and we do what we can to help our nation move in the right direction.
If you have not already voted, then please do so today.
