Tomorrow’s election is of great interest to most people. The polls say slightly different things. Basically, they say the election is too close to call, basing the estimates on what the pollsters believe the people are thinking. There is only one poll that counts, and that’s the poll that will be made tomorrow. When the people have gone to the polls and used the ballots, and when the ballots are counted, then we shall have the results. Before then, everything being said about possible results is sophisticated guesswork.
Of course, we remember the 2000 election, and the uncertain results, with the issue finally being taken before the U.S. Supreme Court for a decision. So we cannot be absolutely certain that the election will be settled for sure by the end of the day tomorrow, but we’ll see. What we do know is that American democracy has always produced a peaceful settlement of election issues, unlike governments in some other countries. Whatever the result of the election, and in spite of very strong feelings on the part of many, we do not expect to see martial law imposed to maintain order.
America! America! God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!
