Always room for one more?

Sure?

March 23, 2012 (Friday)

”picI was born September 24, 1931. According to the experts, I became one of 2,097,015,184 people alive on the earth at the time, and the 74,089,966,655th person to have lived since history began. World population now exceeds 7 billion. There are far more than three times as many people on earth now as there were when I was born. Population increases exponentially, so we will reach 9 billion by 2050. God said, “Be fruitful and multiply.” I think we have done that quite well. At some point we have to give some thought to the question, “Will the earth be able to sustain continued growth?”
I rode the city bus a lot when I was a kid. At times the buses were very crowded. People were standing in the aisles, holding onto metal bars or straps of softer materials. As the bus rolled along the route, stopping to pick up new passengers, the driver would sometimes say, “Always room for one more.” But occasionally the bus was so crowded that the door would not open. Finally there was no more room. Period.
This earth is like a giant spaceship. Its resources are not infinite. There is a limit to the number of people who can live here. Right now, there’s room for more. But will that always be so?
I like to write something funny on Friday. Not so today. As Molly used to say on the radio, “‘Taint funny, McGee.”
