“It is finished” (John 19:30)
Redemption Complete
March 26, 2012 (Monday)
Jesus made seven statements while on the Cross. Today’s blog is devoted to the sixth of these statements, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The words meant that his mission to the earth had been accomplished. Nothing more remained to be done. He had become the final sacrifice for our sins. He did for us what we could not do for ourselves.
“It is finished!” KNOW IT! God promised redemption as soon as man sinned (Genesis 3:15). He prepared the people through ritual, ceremony and sacrifices, all of which were preparatory and awaited the one true sacrifice that would atone for our sins. Jesus Christ fulfilled every promise. He fulfilled the Law and the Prophets. His death at Calvary was the pivotal moment of human history. The eternal plan of redemption was accomplished there.
“It is finished!” ACCEPT IT! There will never be another Savior. There will never be another sacrifice for our sins. There will never be another plan of salvation for all people. “Today is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). When asked by a desperate man, “What must I do to be saved?” the answer was given, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved” (Acts 16:31). That man believed and was saved. You can be saved today. Believe in Jesus. Accept him as Savior and Lord.
“It is finished!” REMEMBER IT! The annual celebration of Passover reminded God’s people of their deliverance as a nation from foreign bondage. The New Testament tells us that “Christ is our Passover” (1 Corinthians 5:7), God’s sacrifice offered one time for all people. Jesus left us a ceremony in remembrance of his death so that we would always remember, but beyond that, we are compelled by our own mind and heart to be thankful to him every day for giving himself for us.
Jesus’ body was taken down from the cross and buried in a tomb, but on the third day the tomb was found empty, because the Son of God conquered death in behalf of us all! It was inevitable because of who he is. His resurrection validates his death as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
“It is finished!” His work is complete. Believe it. Accept it. Remember it.
