Some Sayings by Abraham Lincoln

February 12, 2020 (Wednesday)

Today is Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. My January 14th blog links to one of several blogs about Lincoln, and a few earlier blogs are written about him (See list below). Since much biographical material was included in those blogs, I thought you might be interested in reading something a little different, like some of his quotations. A few quotations attributed to him appear in the box below. I cannot vouch for the authenticity of all of them, but all of them are interesting statements.

QUOTATIONS FROM ABRAHAM LINCOLN

There are no bad pictures; that’s just how your face looks sometimes.

My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.

I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.

Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.

Those who look for the bad in people will surely find it.

I will prepare and someday my chance will come.

Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.

I do the very best I know how – the very best I can; and I mean to keep on doing so until the end.

These quotations are from  Flavia Medrut, a freelance writer, writing in Goldcoast, a publication by an organization of that name, dedicated to helping people pursue personal development.

A popular song in the north, during the Civil War, made a martyr of John Brown. Later the tune was set to more spiritual lyrics, and through the years this soul-stirring hymn has become popular in churches in the north and the south, and is often presented in national patriotic gatherings. The lyrics bring together both spiritual and patriotic themes. The arrangement in the video below is the one usually presented.
