A Beeline to the Cross

February 11, 2020 (Tuesday)

Sunday’s blog elaborated on the phrase, “once for all,” found in Hebrews 10:10. Monday’s blog built upon that thought, and was all about the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, who bore our sins there. Somehow I got acquainted with a line of thinking, as I first started out preparing and preaching sermons, which emphasized the gospel message, and that meant emphasizing Jesus and the Cross. I can hear Corky Ferris, who became missionary to Japan, urging us to preach sermons about Jesus and his death on the Cross for our sins. He said, “It doesn’t matter what your sermon subject is — it could be about the jewels in Aaron’s breastplate — but you should move from there and make a beeline for the Cross.” The Apostle Paul defined the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15 as “the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.” Gospel preachers should always include that message in their sermons.

AT CALVARY
Words, William R. Newell,
Music, Daniel B. Towner
1895

Years I spent in vanity and pride
Caring not my Lord was crucified
Knowing not it was for me He died
On Calvary

Mercy there was great, and grace was free
Pardon there was multiplied to me
There my burdened soul found liberty
At Calvary

By God’s Word at last my sin I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned
Till my guilty soul imploring turned
To Calvary

Mercy there was great, and grace was free
Pardon there was multiplied to me
There my burdened soul found liberty
At Calvary

Now I’ve given to Jesus everything
Now I gladly own Him as my King
Now my raptured soul can only sing
Of Calvary!

Mercy there was great, and grace was free
Pardon there was multiplied to me
There my burdened soul found liberty
At Calvary

Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span
At Calvary!

Mercy there was great, and grace was free
Pardon there was multiplied to me
There my burdened soul found liberty
At Calvary

Now I’ve given to Jesus everything
Now I gladly own Him as my King
Now my raptured soul can only sing
Of Calvary!

Mercy there was great, and grace was free
Pardon there was multiplied to me
There my burdened soul found liberty
At Calvary
