Sometimes hard for me to do
December 18, 2009 (Friday)
In May of 2007, I was urged by some friends to begin writing a blog, so I took the challenge and started writing. My inspiration for this was the blog of a well-known pastor. I enjoy reading his blog every day and, since some of my friends seemed interested in my doing it, I decided to give it a try.
The blog today is number 819. To be perfectly honest with you, sometimes it is very hard to pick a subject. After all, what I have written so far is the equivalent of four 200-page books.
Since the subject matter of these blogs varies from day to day, and touches on quite a few things, every once in a while it might seem that I am slyly addressing a specific situation. I assure you, that has not happened and will not happen. I’ve never done that with sermons or writings. The subjects that I write about are described in the “Howdy Folks” masthead: “Essays of importance, triviality, and in-between.” There have been few of “importance,” and many of the other two kinds. Since retirement 13 years ago, I have tried to adopt a song title as a motto I would love to live by: I “just wanna have some fun.”
“Writers block” is a well-known phenomenon. If you have never experienced it, you have a treat awaiting you. Before writing these daily blogs, I wrote an article for the church’s weekly newsletter once a week for about 30 years. Sometimes it was easy, because I needed to promote some activity or cause within the church. At other times, I sat and stared at the typewriter for long periods of time, waiting for that idea. When it didn’t come, I finally just started writing. Actually, some of the best-loved articles were written under those circumstances. Don’t ask me why, because I don’t know.
The human condition is constantly changing, and some of these articles may apply to your present circumstances so directly that you take it personally. Please do not do that. I’m just trying to think of something to write. If I write it, it’s because I think the dozen or so people (generous estimate) who read this will get some enjoyment or help from it.
The main reason I do it at all is
to make sure,
hopefully,
that my brain
is still functioning
at some level of ability.
