Our lives can count for something good
September 26, 2008 (Friday)
I returned to Houston yesterday, and found everything going well in my neighborhood, and we are planning on having church services Sunday.
These are exciting times. Two weeks ago tonight a ferocious storm made its way to land and did enormous damage. In our neck of the woods the storm called a halt to electric service and did away with many beautiful trees. It kept us awake all night with its loud and boisterous winds. People have done many different things in its aftermath. Some left town, some returned. Some were thankful their house was still standing, others were grateful to be alive to mourn the loss of their homes. We were cut off from news of other things in other places.
Then we began to learn of events beyond our storm. News of another storm of a different kind came to our ears, and each day has brought tidings of impending disaster in the financial world. The stock market is dancing with wild gyrations, while financial geniuses argue about which course to deal with the fiscal crisis is the correct one. Congress is at odds with itself and, even though the President on national television has asked support for a certain course of action, the unfolding of each day seems to reveal more opposition from Senators and Representatives of both political parties.
Exciting, huh? As I observed my 77th birthday this week, in the midst of historical events of monumental proportions, I am thankful to be alive. My great grandfather died at 54, his son at 66, and his grandson, my father, at 71. Here I am, the oldest of all, driving up and down the highways, preaching in churches, in relatively good health, fearful yet confident regarding the future, thankful to be a part of what’s going on.
One day at a time, that’s the way we are all living our lives. Let’s enjoy each day, and let our lives count for something good. Let’s serve the Lord.
