We are “bound together in the bundle of life.”
August 25, 2008 (Monday)
My life is running along pretty well these days, but the news I’ve heard recently about some of my friends has not been so good. I grieve with those who suffer several different kinds of losses today.
The Scripture says we are “bound together in the bundle of life,” a unique and colorful expression. We are all part of one human family, and of that there can be no doubt. That big family, however, has grown to include six and one-half billion people. Since we live miles apart, speak different languages, and are now made up of races, it’s hard for us to think of ourselves as related. If you like to research genealogy, you no doubt know that all roads lead to a common ancestor. The Bible says that God created him, and that’s good enough for me. In my mind, whatever scientific theories that may be offered do not contradict that fact.
So, whenever part of our human family hurts, the whole family is in pain. Or, at least, one might think so. But the tragic truth is that that’s not the way it is. Some humans not only feel no pain when others hurt, they are known to inflict the pain.
So, what do we do? We pray for each other. We do what we can to help and encourage each other. We recognize the complexity of life on a planet already overpopulated, and we do the best we can to make decisions that we believe are in keeping with God’s will and purpose. We take action to help solve problems and make life better for all. We do what we can. We depend on God. That’s what we do.
