Jesus had admirers among the Pharisees. Some of them believed in him, but kept it a secret because open faith in Jesus as the Messiah was certain to bring reprisals. One of these secret believers came to see Jesus one night and had a very interesting conversation with him.
Nicodemus opened the dialogue with, “Sir, we know that God has sent you to teach us. You could not work these miracles, unless God were with you.” Jesus replied, “I tell you for certain that you must be born from above before you can see God’s kingdom!”
Nicodemus found that statement difficult to comprehend and so the conversation continued until Jesus used an illustration that went like this: “The Spirit is like the wind that blows wherever it wants to. You can hear the wind, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going.” In other words Jesus was saying to him, “Everyone believes in things they do not fully understand.”
Jesus emphasized to Nicodemus that night the wonder of being “born again.” You don’t have to understand it completely to experience it. As you believe and accept what you understand about Jesus Christ, the Spirit of God works within you, remaking you.
Are you a child of God by faith? Are you born again? Are you a new person in Christ? Long ago a very religious man discovered that he could become a brand new person through faith in Christ. You can make that same discovery today.
