Only Believe

When I was a young person, still in high school, we had a youth group at church that was very active. In many of our meetings after church in the evening, we would sit in a circle around the room and sing. Sometimes between songs a person would quote a scripture. At other times a person would just start singing a hymn or a chorus and the others would join in. Personal testimonies during these sessions were often heard. One of the choruses we sang often was “Only Believe.” Recently I discovered that the chorus is actually the chorus of a hymn with several verses.

Only Believe
Paul Rader
1921

Fear not, little flock, from the cross to the throne,
From death into life He went for His own;
All power in earth, all power above,
Is given to Him for the flock of His love.
Chorus:
Only believe, only believe;
All things are possible, only believe;
Only believe, only believe;
All things are possible, only believe
.

Fear not, little flock, He goeth ahead,
Your Shepherd selecteth the path you must tread;
The waters of Marah He’ll sweeten for thee,
He drank all the bitter in Gethsemane.
Fear not, little flock, whatever your lot,
He enters all rooms, “the doors being shut,”
He never forsakes; He never is gone,
So count on His presence in darkness and dawn.
