What Time Is It?

Hey, it’s 9:43 a.m. according to the watch above. You will have to hurry if you make it to Sunday School at our church at 10:00 a.m.. The watch that tells you so was given to me for Christmas by my parents when I was in high school. That was more than 70 years ago. Boy, are you going to be late for church! About 70 years late! It’s been so long that the watch is probably an antique by now.
Better late than never? Yes, by all means. If you have been missing church, you need to know that we have been missing you. What time is it? It’s time to get back in church.
After about 10 years of wearing this watch, I decided I wanted one of those newfangled self-winding watches. So I deserted the Bulova and went to the Gruen. Sure enough, it wound itself, as advertised. Later on, I got a watch that ran on a battery. That was nice until the battery ran down. Then, if you had one of those watches, you went to the place that sold batteries and asked the friendly folks behind the counter to install it for you.
All the watches I have ever owned had one thing in common, and that was the fact that they told people the time.
Jesus never wore a watch, but He knew what time it was. According to Him, it was time to prepare for eternity. He said, “Work while it is day, for the night is coming.” I hope you join me in saying, “I want to be ready to meet the Lord at any time; I want to be found faithful.”

WORK FOR THE NIGHT IS COMING
Words by Anna Walker Coghill, 1854
Tune by Lowell Mason, 1864

Work, for the night is coming,
Work through the morning hours;
Work while the dew is sparkling,
Work ‘mid springing flow’rs.
Work when the day grows brighter,
Work in the glowing sun;
Work, for the night is coming,
When man’s work is done.

Work, for the night is coming,
Work through the sunny noon;
Fill brightest hours with labor,
Rest comes sure and soon.
Give every flying minute
Something to keep in store;
Work, for the night is coming,
When man works no more.

Work, for the night is coming,
Under the sunset skies;
While their bright tints are glowing,
Work, for daylight flies.
Work till the last beam fadeth,
Fadeth to shine no more;
Work, while the night is dark’ning,
When man’s work is o’er.
