January 15, 2019 (Tuesday)
Many people pay their taxes by having them withheld from their paychecks. Ministers are allowed to choose that option, but some, such as I, pay their taxes four times a year. They are termed, “Estimated taxes.” I chose that option many years ago. I mention it because today, January 15, is the deadline for paying fourth quarter estimated taxes. I mailed the form and my check and “the check is in the mail,” as the saying goes. The next step for you and me is to file form 1040 and pay more if we paid too little or receive a refund if we paid too much.
The general public is sometimes told that ministers do not pay income taxes. We do. I do it gladly and with gratitude for citizenship in the United States of America.
The main document that guarantees our rights and privileges is the Constitution, which was adopted only after being amended with ten articles that are known as the “Bill of Rights” that are near and dear to our hearts as American citizens. Why should I complain about paying part of what it costs to maintain the greatest country in the world? What a privilege it is to participate in this way. What a wonderful feeling to know that real freedom is ours.
With my check goes a prayer of thanks for the founders of this nation– those who invested “their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor” to establish it–and all those who have since suffered pain and/or death to maintain it. This country is not perfect, but I am convinced it is the best on earth.
God shed His grace on thee!
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
