September7, 2018 (Friday)
As you can see by the dates above, we are one day late in observing National Coffee Ice Cream Day. We chose to go with Read A Book Day yesterday, but I just didn’t have the heart to pass by Coffee Ice Cream Day, even though we are a day late.
When I was a college student in Waco, there was a litte ice cream stand just off the traffic circle there. It was named, “Health Camp,” and it carried many many flavors of ice cream. Once I discovered coffee ice cream, I would go by that place as often as I could afford it, and get a big cone. You may ask, “What has ‘health’ to do with coffee and ice cream?” I’m sure I could come up with some sort of convoluted answer, but I won’t even try. Who cares? I just know it was very good. And I enjoyed it.
You may be one of those fortunate people who love coffee and ice cream. Well, this national observance is for you. National Coffee Ice Cream Day is observed annually on September 6th (yesterday). A day late? No matter. Try it, you’ll like it.
Coffee ice cream has been around for many years. In 1869, coffee ice cream was used in a parfait and a recipe appeared in a 1919 cookbook for an Egg Coffee, consisting of cream, crushed ice and coffee syrup.
You can find this ice cream at Howard Johnson’s restaurant (none near here that I know of), and probably many other places. Or you can buy it at the grocery store; I saw it just the other day in one of those “heaven on earth” ice cream freezers.
To celebrate National Coffee Ice Cream Day, try one of the coffee ice cream dessert recipes:
Coffee Ice Cream Fudge Cake
Dulce de Leche Mocha Ice Cream Dessert
Smores Coffee and Fudge Ice Cream Cake
Did I hear someone say, “Calories?” For shame! Wash your mouth and try to forget having said that.
