National Read A Book Day is observed annually on September 6th, inviting us all to grab a book we might enjoy and spend the day reading.
Reading improves memory and concentration as well as reduces stress. Older adults who spend time reading show a slower cognitive decline and tend to participate in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetime.
When our five children were growing up, their mother introduced them to books at a very early age by reading to them. I can still see them one by one in my mind’s eye, finding a book, picking it up and bringing it to Wanda. Every night she read to them and they loved it. Of course, as soon as it was possible each child started reading along and before we knew it, was reading for himself or herself. They developed a love for reading that was always a part of them.
In our family we are very proud of my granddaughter, Melinda, who is a librarian and in charge of the Public Library in the city of Buda, Texas. Here she is in her new library, in a recent picture with her Aunt Dianna and Uncle Mark.

They were in the area to attend their daughter, Chloe’s, graduation at Texas State University (where Melinda graduated before getting her Master’s at U.T.). Here’s a picture of Chloe.
