Count Your Blessings

In two days we will observe Thanksgiving Day. We will thank the Lord for His blessings. As the song says, we will be surprised if we count our blessings and realize that God blesses us in many ways we rarely think about. For instance, the design of the human body and the way it functions all the time without our being aware of what it’s doing.
Every piece of equipment was designed by someone and assembled with its purpose in mind. It was manufactured to perform a specific function. The human body is like that. Every system (circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, lymphatic, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal, skin and urinary) is serving a purpose, and all the systems work together. We hardly ever think about it unless something goes wrong. A healthy person breathes about 20,000 times each day without thinking about it. His/her heart gives blood a push through the body about 105,000 times every day, and mostly we don’t notice.

We probably thank the Lord for good health, but it might make us more aware of just how much God is blessing us if we think for a while about the many systems of the body and how they all work together on their own. I’m not suggesting we pause between breaths and/or heartbeats to thank God for each one of them, but I do think we probably need to be a little more aware of just how good God is to us in ways we don’t usually talk about. “Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.”
