A gospel song that touches my heart every time I hear it is, “Why Should He Love Me So?” by Robert Harkness (1880-1961). Harkness was born in Australia. He was raised in a Christian home, but did not come to Christ until later. Before becoming a Christian, he was a great pianist. After playing for some evangelical services, the music director had a talk with him, informing him that he needed to be “born again.” The young man thought about what he had been told and accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He became a part of the evangelism team, and later wrote more than 2,000 hymns and gospel songs. The song for today’s blog is one of his greatest. It has blessed untold numbers of people through the years.
Robert Harkness (1880-1961)
1924
Chorus:
Why should He love me so?
Why should He love me so?
Why should my Saviour to Calvary go?
Why should he love me so?
Verses:
1) Love sent my Saviour to die in my stead,
Why should He love me so?
Meekly to Calvary’s cross He was led,
Why should He love me so?
2) Nails pierced His hands and His feet for my sin;
Why should He love me so?
He suffered sore my salvation to win;
Why should He love me so?
3) O how He agonized there in my place,
Why should He love me so?
Nothing withholding my sin to efface,
Why should He love me so?
