“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” is one of our oldest hymns.
Personally, I have found parts of it difficult for congregations to sing, but in the care of great choral groups and choirs the message comes through loudly and clearly.
Looking back at the warfare methods of the middle ages, when this hymn was written, the armed fortress was an integral part of many battles. Luther has in mind the spiritual warfare spoken of by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6, and our leader in this war is none other than our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
