September 25, 2016 (Sunday)
Today after our morning worship service, the Bethel Baptist Church of Ingleside will have a dinner to join me in celebration of my 85th birthday (yesterday, Sept 24).
I wonder how many churches today have a pastor as old as I. Not many, I would guess. I never dreamed I would still be preaching at my age. What’s more, I never imagined that anyone would want to hear what I have to say. So I am very, very thankful for the privilege of service the Lord and His people have given me.
I plan to live the rest of my life one day at a time. I will be asking the Lord each day to help me make His way mine.
There is a song, much like the one featured in yesterday’s blog, about taking life one day at a time. That’s what we do, whether we want to do it that way or not. Yet I think we can become impatient and restless, robbing ourselves of peace within if we do not live our lives one day at a time, as Jesus urged us to do. The way he put it, “..seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:33-34 NIV).
Back to the song. Here it is:
One Day At A Time “I’m only human I’m just a man
Marijohn Wilkin and Kris Kristofferson
Help me to believe in what I could be and all that I am
Show me the stairway that I have to climb
Lord for my sake teach me to take one day at a time.
One day at a time sweet Jesus that’s all I’m asking from you
Give me the strength to do everyday what I have to do
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time.
Do you remember when you walked among men
Well Jesus you know if you’re looking below
It’s worse now than then
Pushing and shoving, crowding my mind
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time.
One day at a time sweet Jesus that’s all I’m asking from you
Give me the strength to do everyday what I have to do
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time.
Yes, just for my sake teach me to take one day at a time...
