September 24, 2016 (Saturday)
Today is my birthday. I’ve seen 85 birthdays now. I’ve experienced 85 Christmases, 85 Independence Days, 85 New Years Days, 85 Easters, 85 of everything that comes around once a year. It’s been fun.
But let’s talk about tomorrow. Today is the “tomorrow” we talked about yesterday. We can still talk about tomorrow, today. We always hold hope for a tomorrow.
“Tomorrow” is an optimistic word. It holds promise. Annie sang it: “The sun’ll come out tomorrow so ya gotta hang on ’til tomorrow come what may. Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya Tomorrow! You’re always a day away!”
Today on my birthday I’m thinking about what a young man said to me. Forty-eight years ago on a San Francisco street he asked me for a dollar so that he could “celebrate the first day of the rest of my life.” That’s what today is for me (the first day of the rest of my life). And for you, too.
Not long ago I wrote a blog that declared, “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” I’m thinking about that message today. I do know who holds tomorrow. In my heart I’m singing that song. So that you may sing it, too, here it is:
