and getting bigger
JANUARY 11, 2008 (FRIDAY)
Once upon a time Oldsmobile had a sales campaign and used the slogan, “This is not your father’s Oldsmobile!” An obvious appeal to younger buyers, the company was asking them to give the new car a try, because a lot about the car had changed over the years.
In the same vein I say today, “This is not your ancestor’s U.S.A.!” Much has changed since 1776.
Perhaps the most obvious change is in the size of our population. When our forefathers “brought forth a new nation,” its population was about 2 ½ million. There are now more than 20 million people in Texas alone! Population of the United States is now 300 million people and counting.
The present president of our country leads a nation 120 times larger in numbers of people than when George Washington held the office.
Our nation still has the same constitution (amended, of course) as it had then and still bears the same name. The nation, however, has grown in every way possible during these 232 years of its history. Today there is more: more land, more states, more laws, more people, more of everything good and bad.
The President of the United States of America not only leads a big nation, but is also de facto leader of the six billion people of the world. At least that’s my opinion.
The Scriptures urge us to pray “for kings and all who are in authority.” I can’t think of anyone in the world who needs our prayers more than the President of the United States, whoever he may be. The job will become bigger and the responsibilities greater in the years ahead. Let us pray for him and all our leaders.
