Theme for this week: “It’s Your Time”
March 8, 2022 (Tuesday)
Rick Warren is often called “America’s most influential spiritual leader.” He and his wife, Kay, founded Saddleback Church in Orange County, California, which is now one of the largest and best-known churches in the world. He also wrote the #1 all-time bestselling hardcover book, “The Purpose Driven Life” (sub-title “What On Earth Am I Here For?). Warren has written many best selling books. There is a widespread desire to understand the meaning of life.*
Knowing one’s purpose in life must be a desirable subject for a book because that book has sold millions upon millions of copies. What that fact reveals to us is that the world is filled with people who want to discover their purpose for living. As a result, Warren is wealthy, no longer receives a salary from his church and donates much of his wealth to many good causes.
According to Warren, five things God wants you to do are: Believe in Jesus, Be baptized, Join A church, Attend worship, and have fellowship with other believers. The five objectives of the church (Worship, Witness, Nurture, Fellowship and Ministry) become five purposes for the Christian.
The question for you is, “Do you know what your purpose for living is?”
I’m sure that question could be answered in many ways, but I choose to answer it by giving the answer Jesus gave when asked for the “greatest commandment.” And the answer is, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40 NIV).
If this is the principle that guides your every thought and action, then your purpose for living is clear: “Love God sincerely and love everyone else with the same pure love.” Living by this principle will enable you to know and understand God’s presence and power in your life. God may lead you to discover many purposes for your life, but those purposes will be determined by your love for God and others.
LOVE LIFTED ME
Words by James Rowe
Tune by Howard E. Smith
1912
I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more,
But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.
Refrain:
Love lifted me!
Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me!
All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I’ll cling,
In His blessed presence live, ever His praises sing,
Love so mighty and so true, merits my soul’s best songs,
Faithful, loving service, too, to Him belongs.
Refrain
Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves,
He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves;
He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey,
He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.
Refrain
