The history of this hymn is a little different from other hymns. It is probable that the author was an aristocrat. The music from around 1900 was considered political at the time. As time went on, these roots seemed to fade away in light of the beauty of the music and the sincerity of the words. I’ve heard this hymn all my life, but seldom in a Baptist Worship service. I do not know why, because we Baptists love good hymns, and this is a good one indeed.
