Grace Greater Than Our Sin

“It is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV).
Grace is “undeserved mercy.” It is described in this hymn’s title as “greater than our sin.” The song describes grace as “marvelous, infinite, matchless and free.”
The plain truth is, “We cannot save ourselves.” All of us have fallen short, morally. In other words, we have sinned. God’s grace, however, is “greater than all our sin.”

GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN
Words by Julia H. Johnston
Tune by Daniel B. Towner

1910
Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.
Refrain:
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!
Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.
Dark is the stain that we cannot hide;
What can we do to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.
Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?
