Close to Thee

Theme this week: Walking with the Lord

October 27, 2021 (Wednesday)

The little boy was sure of himself as he and his father approached an icy path. His father spoke: “We’re going to walk on some ice now, so please give me your hand.” The child ignored the request, saying, “I can do it myself.” Sure enough, as they began walking on the icy patch, the little fellow slipped and fell. His father lifted him up and they resumed their walk until he slipped again. This time he looked up into the kind eyes of the one who loved him and wanted to help him, humbly saying, “You may take my hand now.” Together they safely walked, the boy’s hand in the hand of his loving father.

Sometimes we are like the child, saying to ourselves, “I’ve got this. I can handle it,” only to discover that we are not as wise or as strong as we thought. We need to recognize that our Heavenly Father is stronger and wiser than we are, slipping our hand into His strong hand, to walk safely through whatever challenge is facing us in life.

We are much safer when we stay close to the Lord, depending upon Him and His love for us. He will not forsake us. We are safe in His care. Let us remain close to Him.

CLOSE TO THEE
Words, Fanny Crosby
Music, Silas J. Vail
1874

Thou my everlasting portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.

Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
Nor for fame my prayer shall be;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.

Lead me through the vale of shadows,
Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
