O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee

Theme this week: Walking with the Lord

October 28, 2021 (Thursday)

In 1952, I attended a Wednesday evening prayer service at the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City. The pastor, Hershel Hobbs, famous Southern Baptist pastor and theologian, was leading the service. He introduced a hymn for us to sing, “O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee,” taking time to tell us how much the words meant to him; the words describe the desire that all Christians should feel in their hearts to have a close relationship with the Lord.

The life of Moses teaches us much about walking with the Lord. He lived 120 years, the first 40 walking ahead of God, the second 40 walking behind God, and the third 40 walking with God. It is his walk with God that we remember best. When he was called to lead the descendants of Jacob (Israel) to the promised land, he learned to pray, “O Master, let me walk with Thee.” This is a prayer, that we, too, must offer to the Lord for our daily walk with Him.

O MASTER, LET ME WALK WITH THEE

Washington Gladden, 1879
H. Percy Smith, pub.1874

O Master, let me walk with Thee,
In lowly paths of service free;
Tell me Thy secret; help me bear
The strain of toil, the fret of care.

Help me the slow of heart to move
By some clear, winning word of love;
Teach me the wayward feet to stay,
And guide them in the homeward way.

Teach me Thy patience; still with Thee
In closer, dearer, company,
In work that keeps faith sweet and strong,
In trust that triumphs over wrong.

In hope that sends a shining ray
Far down the future’s broad’ning way,
In peace that only Thou canst give,
With Thee, O Master, let me live.

O Master, let me walk with Thee
In lowly paths of service free
Tell me Thy secret, help me bear
The strain of toil, the fret of care

Teach me Thy patience, still with Thee
In closer, dearer company
In work that keeps faith sweet and strong
In truth that triumphs over wrong

O Master let me walk with Thee
In closer, dearer company
O Master let me walk with Thee
O let me walk with Thee

In hope that sends a shining ray
Far down the future’s broadening way
In peace that only Thou canst give
With Thee, O Master, let me live

O Master let me walk with Thee
O Master let me walk with Thee
