Teaching By Word and Deed

Today at Bethel Baptist Church, Ingleside, we will study Mark 4:21-41, which shows us that Jesus taught both in words and deeds.
Last week we looked at the Parable of the Soils, and we learned through that parable that the effectiveness of teaching depends upon the listener’s circumstances and attitude. Some hear the word and let it take root in their hearts, producing real results in their lives.
Jesus taught with words. He shared stories. In quick succession, Mark shares with us Jesus’ teachings about how a lamp stand demonstrates how the gospel must be openly shared if it is to be spiritually powerful, and how we are blessed in return when we share it. Then Jesus pointed out how the seed grows even when the farmer is sleeping, showing the power of the word of God in and of itself. After that he cited the example of the very small mustard seed, which produces huge results, demonstrating the power of the gospel message. In these examples, Mark shows how Jesus taught with words.
Jesus also taught with deeds. Mark then tells of Jesus being awakened from sleep in a boat with the disciples in a storm. They asked him, “Don’t you care if we drown?”

Jesus replied by speaking to the storm, “Peace, be still.” All was calm, and Jesus asked them, “Why are you afraid? Where is your faith?” This time Jesus used few words, but taught them by example. They would never forget the lesson.
We are part of the message we proclaim. People may not read the gospel according to Mark, but they will read the gospel according to us. “What you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say,” is an oft-repeated quotation. Jesus showed us what faith is. Now it’s our turn to show others.
