Others

Jesus chose twelve men to learn from Him as they accompanied Him for three and one-half years of ministry. That arrangement meant that Jesus was rarely alone. One of the twelve betrayed Jesus into the hands of those who had Him crucified. The others were faithful to Jesus. They needed Jesus to be with them and Jesus needed them to be with Him. They provided fellowship–with each other and with Jesus.

There is one basic fact about us human beings: we need each other. One thing we have observed about ourselves is that being alone and being lonely are not the same human condition. Many people who spend much time alone are still content with their situation. Others who are surrounded by people day after day live a lonely life. It is a psychological condition, perhaps a spiritual condition. The Beatles wrote a song about it: “All the lonely people, where do they all come from? All the lonely people, where do they all belong?”

After God created the first man, He said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” God knew that a man being alone could become lonely, which is a state of mind. The plain truth is that you need others and others need you. As Christians we have a three-fold duty to our brothers and sisters in Christ: 1. To confess our need of each other. 2. To pray for each other. 3. To love each other.

OTHERS
Words: Charles D. Meigs, 1902
Music: William E. M. Hackleman, 1915
1902, 1915

Lord, help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayer shall be for others.
Refrain:
Yes, others, Lord, yes, others,
Let this my motto be;
Help me to live for others,
Help me to live for others,
That I may live like Thee,
That I may live like Thee.

Help me in all the work I do
To ever be sincere and true,
And know that all I’d do for You
Must needs be done for others.
Refrain

Let “Self” be crucified and slain
And buried deep: and all in vain
May efforts be to rise again,
Except to live for others.
Refrain

So when my work on earth is done,
And my new work in heav’n’s begun,
I’ll praise You for the crown I’ve won,
But praise You more for others.
Refrain
