Old Glory – Long May It Wave

Thank you for your patience as the blog was down for a few days. Mrs. Patty Albin, Office Manager of the First Baptist Church of Rockport, is the Administrator of the blog site that includes Dale Pogue and me as bloggers. We really appreciate all she does to make this blog possible. As soon as she discovered the problem, she had it fixed. So now we are “in business” again.
When South Carolina began consideration of removing the Confederate War Flag from their state house, the publicity set off a wave of calls for removal of flags, monuments and memorials all over the country.
The Houston Chronicle called for the renaming of Dowling Street, named for a Confederate hero, and while at it asked for the removal of names of schools where many of my friends and some of my family attended.
The next thing I heard was the demand for the removal of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. because Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Included in the call for d-emphasis were George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe and others. Over at the University of Texas some are requesting removal of statues and monuments.
I personally think that this hysteria is akin to the actions of Isis as it systematically destroys priceless historical sites and artifacts. A re-written history is no history at all. A solemn reminder to all of us is the statement, “Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.”
The most outrageous petition of which I have ever heard is the one calling for the flag of the United States of America to be changed into something different because it is, they say, a “symbol of oppression.” I can think of many words to describe such thinking; I’ll leave the choice of words to you. “Applesauce” is a recently used word–not strong enough.
Political Correctness is based upon the idea of respect for others, but it has run amok and has become something else entirely when it attacks Old Glory, symbol of freedom throughout its history. As this flag flies above us, it shouts for all to hear: “LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!”
