When I was a little tyke, I had experiences that I do not remember. But I know what some of those experiences were, because my grandfather told me about them. My grandparents had no car, so they walked a lot, and many times took me with them. I had to take three steps, very quick steps, to their one. Consequently, I grew tired before they did. My hand was always held by my grandfather. When I got tired, I looked up at him and said, “Me wanna wide.” (Translation: “I’m tired now; please pick me up and carry me.”) That’s what my grandfather told me.
I have since discovered that there are times in my life when I feel like that again. But it’s not my grandfather I’m asking for help; it’s the Lord. I identify with the words of a good old song: “Oh well, I’m tired and so weary, but I must go along, ’till the Lord comes and calls me away..” I suppose those words are the equivalent of “Me wanna wide.”
Perhaps I should be singing, “O soul art thou weary and troubled, no light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, and grace more abundant and free. Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”
Even better, stay close to the Lord all the time.
CLOSE TO THEE
Words, Fanny Crosby
Music, Silas J. Vail
1874
Thou my everlasting portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
Nor for fame my prayer shall be;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.
Lead me through the vale of shadows,
Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea;
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Then the gate of life eternal
May I enter, Lord, with Thee.
