April 3, 2015 (Friday)
Today is Good Friday.
Some scholars have concluded that Jesus was crucified April 3, AD33, the same date as today. The date on our calendars changes from year to year, but “Good Friday” is always observed, remembering that Jesus was “wounded for our transgressions.” He was “bruised for our iniquities.” “The chastisement of our peace was upon Him,” and “with His stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53).
In our part of the world, we refer to this day as “Good Friday.” “Good,” in this sense, means “holy.” Good Friday is known as “Holy Friday” in the Romance languages, and “Holy and Great Friday” among Eastern Christians. Germans refer to this day as “Karfreitag”–that is, Sorrowful or Suffering Friday–in German. When we in our country hear the words, “Good Friday,” we know it’s a reference to the day upon which Jesus was crucified. Good Friday is called good because Christ, by His Death, “showed His great love for man, and purchased for him every blessing.”
Seems now I see Him on Calvary’s tree,
Wounded and bleeding,
For sinners pleading–blind and unheeding,
Dying for me.
The death of Christ
led to the Resurrection on Easter Sunday,
bringing new life to those who believe.
He lives! He lives!
Christ Jesus lives today,
He walks me and talks with me
Along life’s narrow way.
He lives! He lives!
Salvation to impart.
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart.
