O.K., the picture of me at the left is almost a “selfie.” I was trying to take it with my new tablet, but Dwight showed up and helped me out by taking it for me. I’m not sure how I did it, but, with Dwight’s help, I moved it over to the desktop computer I always use to write the blog. Without Dwight, I don’t think I’ll be able to do it again. But, maybe I will. Who knows?
I keep changing these blog portraits of myself, hoping that one of them will “photoshop” itself and I’ll appear handsome, but alas, they all look like me. This one has a grin that I use a lot to hide my teeth, which have been begging for a dentist’s attention for years.
Yesterday afternoon I watched West Virginia and Texas A & M play a bowl game. One thing can surely be said about the young men who played: they played with all their heart. They gave their best. We have a hymn that puts that theme to music. It goes like this:
Hear ye the Master’s call, “Give me thy best,”
For be it great or small, that is His test.
Do then the best you can, not for reward,
Not for the praise of men, but for the Lord!”
Was that hymn written for you? Was it written for me? Are we giving our best? Is our heart in our labors? When we worship, do we focus all our attention on the Lord? Do we pray, like Jacob of old, for the blessings of the Lord? Do we long for a closer walk with the Lord? Do we desire to do what Jesus said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength?”
The ancient people of God were told to bring the first fruits from their crops and the spotless sheep from their flocks–their very best. Does Jesus deserve any less than our best?
