October 20, 2014 (Monday)
On this date, in 1939, Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra recorded the song, “All the Things You Are.” The words are beautiful, and do a great job of communicating the feelings of genuine love. It is a song composed by Jerome Kern, with lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II, for the musical Very Warm for May. Even if you have been married for a long time, your mate would love to hear you say things like this:
You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song
You are the angel glow that lights the star
The dearest things that I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you
And someday I’ll know that moment divine
When all the things you are, are mine.
Now, that’s what a call a love song. Anyone ever feel that way about you? Then Thank the Lord. Ever feel that way about anyone? Blessings upon you. This old world could use a few more songs about real love.
