You Are the Light

The previous two blogs told us to “keep on the sunny side of life,” and “brighten the corner where you are.” Both blogs were about “light.”
Throughout the Bible, sinfulness is represented as a darkness of the soul. Perhaps you have visited Carlsbad Caverns and experienced that special moment when all lights are extinguished and you experience total darkness. When that happens, you become disoriented, unable to determine direction or distance of anything around you. For a brief moment, you live in a world without color or substance. It’s quite a relief when the lights are turned on again. The entire episode gives you a new perspective on light; you see it as needed, beautiful, and fulfilling. Light frees you from the darkness.
Jesus said of Himself, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). He continued, ” Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus said more than that. He spoke to us and declared, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). In another Bible verse, He is quoted as telling us, “I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth” (Acts 13:47).
In order to fulfill this noble purpose, we are urged to “walk in the light as He is in the light” (1 John 1:7 NIV).
Yes! Keep on the sunny side of life. Brighten the corner where you are. And walk in the light so that you may become the light that guides people to the Savior.
May the children’s song become our own: “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine.”
