Cold Snap

This cold snap in Texas and across the nation brings back memories. When I was a boy of 17 in Houston in January 1949, I saw 2.6 inches of snow and a temperature of 12 degrees. I lived across town from my high school and had to ride a city bus downtown and transfer to another bus to get to the school. I recall putting on as many clothes as I could, including several pairs of socks, etc. but the bus was late and I got so cold I could not feel anything in my feet, so I went back home (a mere two blocks away). I thought classes would be dismissed for sure, but no–I was marked absent that day.
I remember snow in the month of March in Waco in the early 1950’s. If I remember correctly, the snow in March was preceded by mild weather in January and February. Kinda wacky.
The largest snowfall I ever saw personally was in Dallas in the early 1960’s. Nine inches of snow overnight let us wake up to a giant Christmas card.
I’m sorry to say I missed the beautiful White Christmas in Rockport a few years ago. I was living temporarily in Houston to pastor Timbergrove Baptist Church. A few small flurries fell in the neighborhood there. The Coastal Bend became a “Winter Wonderland.”
