Well, a real cold front has come in. Doubtless it feels colder to us than it actually is, because we have been warm for so long.
Back in the 1970’s Baptists had a convention in Abilene around this time of year, and I attended. A cold front blew in and I discovered that my car heater was broken. I don’t think I’ve ever been as cold as I was that night in that car. I was shaking all over and while driving from the convention center to my motel I stopped at the first cafe I saw and ordered hot chocolate.
People who have experienced super cold temperatures have to laugh at us when we complain of cold weather in South Texas. Not that it cannot get plenty cold–if you have lived here for any length of time you have seen freezes that killed fish and broke a lot of household pipes. I think I’m correct, though, when I say that last winter there was no freeze down here.
I recall one of our church lads who joined the military and was stationed in or near the Arctic Circle. He described what happens when temperatures dip to 65 below zero. It’s a different world under those conditions. Nothing behaves the same, and exposure to the elements is very dangerous. Now that’s cold.
It won’t get down to 65 below zero tonight in Rockport, but it will drop to the forties along the coast here. And it really feels cold. I recall overhearing a couple from Illinois talking with each other when one of those “blue northers” blew in–they were talking about how cold they were.
I know I should be thankful in all circumstances and should be happy about every season, but cold weather is one of my least favorite things.
