School Days

Today is a special day for many in our community; it’s the first day of school for the 2013-2014 school year.
Do you remember the old song, “School Days?” It was composed in1907 by Will Cobb and Gus Edwards. It reflects the simpler times of that era.
The best known part of the song is its chorus:

School days, school days
Dear old Golden Rule days
‘Reading and ‘riting and ‘rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hick’ry stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful, barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, “I Love You So”
When we were a couple o’ kids.

I can think back over my school days and remember every year and every teacher. Perhaps you can, too. Those were vitally important days, preparing us for life. Hats off to everybody who makes possible the education of children and young people.

OTHER LYRICS:
In 1949, a different version appeared, by Louis Jordan and his tympani five.
A song by the same name, composed by Richard Barone and Will D. Cobb was made famous by Chuck Berry in 1957. It was a great rock and roll song. Quite different from the original 1907 song by the same name.
