Fall Foliage

October 1, 2020 (Thursday)

We can’t change the news reports, but we can choose to think of something beautiful. God’s wonderful world.

Twenty-three years ago, at this time of year, our son, David, gave us a round trip to New England to see the fall foliage. We flew to Providence, rented a car, then drove north through Vermont to the national border, and back to Burlington, where we took a ferry to upstate New York, then drove to Lake Placid in the Adirondacks. That’s where we were on our wedding anniversary.

Everything was beautiful. The foliage was breathtaking. We then drove to Utica, N.Y where my ancestors lived, and on to Niagara Falls. From there we saw Ithaca, N.Y., then Lancaster and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania before driving to Baltimore, where we took a plane back home. A wonderful trip. If you have never seen the fall foliage in various parts of our great country, you should give it a try when all this pandemic stuff is over.

This year will not be a peak year in foliage because of a dry summer, but even a bad year of foliage in New England is a great year to go look at the foliage. The foliage season offers great color throughout from late September in northern New England through early November in southern New England. The leaves will still change color.

It’s a good idea to check state tourism websites before traveling out-of-state due to possible travel restrictions because of the coronavirus pandemic.

O beautiful, for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain,
America, America,
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea.
