Remember Laura

September 2, 2020 (Wednesday)

Remember learning the alphabet? A B C D E F G H I J K L . . .

STOP! JUST LOOK AT ALL THOSE LETTERS. 12 LETTERS! That’s how many named storms we have already had this hurricane season. And today is only the second day of September, the busiest month of storms! “L” is for “Laura.” She came. She went. She’s still going..somewhere. If you could see the entire western hemisphere without moving your head..oh, wait..you can! Here is part of it, by satellite, and right there, looking at you with that huge evil eye, is Laura, poised out in the Gulf east of us, moving toward Louisiana and Southeast Texas. You are seeing a lot of the earth, and the storm is so big and strong you can identify it easily. There will be more storms like this. We can count on it.

It came ashore as one of the strongest ever. It spelled “disaster”
for those in its path. (The predicted storm surge was described as
“unsurvivable”). It spelled “warning” for those of us who live in
storm-prone areas.

And so we pray for those who need assistance and we do what we
can to help. We will also remain very much aware that we must
be prepared and ready to do whatever is necessary to remain safe
should one of these hurricanes become an unwelcome visitor to
Rockport.

Half the alphabet stands ready to name more storms. Let us remain
alert.

“M” is sitting in the wings, waiting to be called upon to perform.

Hey, here it is Wednesday already (I wrote the earlier parts of this blog days ago). Boy, am I behind the times. The “M” storm was Marco and he hooked up with Laura then went his way. Now the “N” storm, “Nana,” is in the Caribbean and expected to go to Central America, and the “O” storm, “Omar,” is headed out to sea in the Atlantic Ocean. But, never forget that there are others being formed as you read this. “Hurricane Alley” in the Atlantic has several disturbances now. Could be Paulette, Rene, Sally or Teddy..

Paraphrasing the Rabbi in Fiddler on the Roof, “Lord, please keep those storms…far away from here.”

Instead of re-writing this blog in light of further developments, I left it as it was and added to it. The main thing I wanted you to see was the satellite photograph of the western hemisphere with the crystal clear photo of Hurricane Laura in the Gulf.
