September Song
Words, Kurt Weill
Music, Maxwell Anderson
1938
Oh, it’s a long long while
From May to December
But the days grow short
When you reach September
When the autumn weather
Turns leaves to flame
One hasn’t got time
For the waiting game
Oh, the days dwindle down
To a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days
I’ll spend with you
These precious days
I’ll spend with you
Oh, the days dwindle down
To a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days
I’ll spend with you
These precious days
I’ll spend with you
These precious days
I’ll spend with you
The song is relaying the message that life is short, and each day is precious. Those of us who have lived a long time rely on the Bible verse which says, “My times are in Your Hands (Psalm 31:5).” So, whatever our age, it’s all OK. “September” was a while back for some of us, but each day is still precious. And those who share these days with us are precious.
