Next week we will celebrate the 226th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. For all practical purposes, July 4, 1776 is considered the birth date of our nation. When the nation was finally established, it came into being with a marvelous document known as the Constitution, which created three branches of government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. A Supreme Court was established, and through these more than 200 years, that court has made many rulings concerning the constitutionality of laws in the United States of America.
Today the court will make public its rulings concerning a sweeping health care law which affects all citizens in one way or another. At least 30 lawsuits have been filed by those who want parts of the law declared unconstitutional. Since it is a huge law with many parts, these lawsuits have targeted specific sections for litigation.
Whatever you may think of the law, there can be no doubt that today’s decisions by the Supreme Court will be remembered as momentous. You and I live in important times. It is always so.
